Lawn care tips for spring

Spring is here, and it’s time to start thinking about lawn care. After the harsh winter, your lawn needs a little extra TLC to get back to its full glory. In this blog post, we will provide you with some tips for spring lawn care to help your lawn look its best.

Clean up debris

Start by cleaning up any debris that has accumulated on your lawn over the winter. Remove fallen branches, twigs, and any other debris that may have collected on your lawn. This will make it easier to see the areas that need attention and allow your grass to grow without any obstacles.

Aerate your lawn

Aeration is the process of creating small holes in your lawn to allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the soil. This will help your lawn grow deeper roots and allow for better absorption of nutrients. You can rent an aerator from a garden center or hire a professional to do it for you.

Aeration allows air to circulate more freely through the soil, which promotes healthy root growth. This is especially important in compacted soil where air cannot easily penetrate. When your lawn is aerated, water can more easily penetrate the soil, reaching the roots where it is needed. This helps to prevent water runoff and reduces the amount of water you need to use to keep your lawn healthy.

Remove weeds

Spring is the perfect time to remove any weeds that may have popped up in your lawn. You can use a weed killer or pull them out by hand. It’s important to remove weeds before they go to seed, or they will spread and become more difficult to control.

“Weed and feed” products available at your local garden center or home improvement store are an ideal remedy for weeds during the spring month. Spot treatments with common herbicides will also do the trick, but avoid products such as Roundup that will damage healthy grass along with the weeds. For those who prefer the natural route, weeds can be pulled up the old fashioned way, one at a time, with some thick gardening gloves and some basic hand tools.

Fertilize liberally

Fertilizing your lawn in the spring will provide your grass with the nutrients it needs to grow strong and healthy. Use a high-quality fertilizer that is designed for spring application, and be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application rates.

Mow the right way

As soon as your lawn starts to grow, it’s time to start mowing. Set your mower to the highest setting to avoid cutting the grass too short, as this can damage the roots. Mow your lawn regularly, but never remove more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mowing.

In the spring, it’s best to mow your lawn at a higher length than you would in the summer. The ideal length to mow your lawn in the spring is around 2.5 to 3 inches (6.5 to 7.5 centimeters). Mowing your lawn at this length will help to promote healthy root growth, as longer grass blades allow for more photosynthesis to occur. Additionally, longer grass provides shade to the soil, which helps to retain moisture and prevent weed growth.

Water, water, water

Your lawn will need plenty of water in the spring to promote healthy growth. Water your lawn deeply and infrequently to encourage deep root growth. Aim for about an inch of water per week, and water in the early morning to reduce evaporation. Keep an eye on the forecast, too. In the rainy spring season, mother nature can do much of the heavy lifting in the form of precipitation when it comes to watering.

Repair bare spots

If you have bare spots in your lawn, spring is the perfect time to repair them. Rake the area to remove any dead grass and debris, then spread grass seed and cover with a thin layer of soil or compost. Keep the area moist until the grass begins to grow.
