Buying A Home That Works For You and Your Pets

Pets aren’t just pets, they’re part of your family. Thinking about what needs your pet has before buying a home can save you from problems in the future. Here are some tips when looking for a home that you and your pet will love.

Choosing A Location

It’s important to think about the safety of your pet when choosing a location. Choosing a home that is on a busy street could be dangerous. Even with a fence, a busy road can still be a problem if they accidentally get loose. It’s a good idea to check out the area to make sure it’s pet-friendly. Ask yourself:

  • Are there pet-friendly parks nearby?
  • Are your neighbors pet owners?
  • Are there veterinarians and groomers nearby?
  • Are there wild animals that could harm your pet?

Check Regulations and Pet Policies

Some homeowner associations (HOAs) will set rules on the type of animals allowed in a neighborhood. Rules could give you a guideline for size, breed, and other specifics. In addition,  there may be a strict number of animals you can have in your home. Don’t ignore these rules and regulations. You may find yourself with an upset neighbor that can report you to the HOA if your pet isn’t permitted. Not following these rules can lead to expensive penalties.

Consider the Home Interior

Another thing you should think about is the inside of the home. If you have a new puppy that isn’t completely potty trained, it might be a good idea to look for wood floors for easier cleanup. If you have an older dog that has trouble getting up the stairs, a one-floor style home might be a better fit. Do you have a big dog that likes to run around and play in the house? You may want to consider a home with more square footage.
